J’explore le paysage en marchant, et en fréquentant ceux qui l’habitent. La photographie constitue une tentative pour adopter d’autres perspectives, des points de vues étrangers, et ainsi m’ éduquer au regard des autres. Chaque série photographique se construit donc comme l’écriture visuelle d’expériences anthropologiques.

I explore the landscape by walking through it and by spending time with those who inhabit it. Photography invites to adopt other perspectives, unfamiliar points of view, and thus to educate myself through the gaze of others. Each photographic series is therefore constructed as the visual writing of anthropological experiences.

Mathieu Lion explore le territoire à travers une photographie où se croisent approche documentaire et fiction. En utilisant des appareils d’époques variées, argentiques et numériques, il construit un langage hybride, mêlant maîtrise du cadrage et ouverture à l’accidentel. Différentes approches dialoguent au fil des images, dans une alliance entre descriptions scientifiques et intentions poétiques.

Ses instantanés se déploient en séquences, recomposant une observation minutieuse du paysage et des événements. Chaque série s’écrit dans une tension entre présence et absence, invitant à réfléchir autant sur le sujet des images que sur ce qui échappe au cadre.

Parallèlement à ses recherches visuelles, il rencontre celles et ceux qui habitent la campagne, associant photographie et documents sonores pour esquisser une pespective métissée – celle d’un photographe urbain avec celles de mondes ruraux qui lui étaient étrangers. Inspiré par les sciences humaines, notamment l’anthropologie, son travail s’inscrit dans les questionnements actuels sur notre relation au vivant et à l’idée de nature.

Biographie__

Mathieu Lion, né en 1991, est diplômé de l’École Supérieure d’Arts et Médias de Caen en 2015. Il développe depuis plusieurs années un propos sur le paysage, qui interroge nos représentations de la ruralité et de la nature. En travaillant en immersion lors de résidences artistiques, il s’inspire des recherches en sciences-humaines pour construire une approche hybride de l’image, entre photo documentaire et photo plasticienne.

Il a été accueilli en résidence par la Villa La Brugère en 2022 et par le Champs des Impossibles en 2023. Ses photographies ont été diffusées lors d’expositions en Normandie (Le Radar, Bayeux ; Le Musée des Beaux-Arts de Caen) et à l’étranger par le magazine États-unien Subjectively-Objective (Detroit, USA). Ses œuvres sont entrées en 2024 dans les collections de l’ARDI – photographies. Ses différentes pratiques de l’image ont donné lieu à des collaborations répétées avec des poètes et des musiciens.

Photography and Visual Anthropology_

Mathieu Lion explores territory through photography where documentary and fiction intersect. Using cameras from various eras, both analog and digital, he constructs a hybrid language, blending careful composition with openness to the accidental. Different approaches converse throughout the images, in an alliance between scientific description and poetic intent.

His snapshots unfold in sequences, recomposing a meticulous observation of landscape and events. Each series is written in a tension between presence and absence, inviting reflection not only on the subject of the images but also on what escapes the frame.

Alongside his visual research, he meets with those who inhabit the countryside, combining photography and sound recordings to sketch a mixed perspective — that of an urban photographer with those of rural worlds previously unknown to him. Inspired by the human sciences, particularly anthropology, his work is rooted in current questions about our relationship to living beings and the idea of nature.

Biography__

Mathieu Lion, born in 1991, graduated from the École Supérieure d’Arts et Médias in Caen in 2015. For several years, he has been developing a body of work focused on landscape, questioning our representations of rurality and nature. Working in immersion during artist residencies, he draws inspiration from research in the human sciences to build a hybrid approach to imagery, between documentary photography and fine art photography.

He was welcomed in residence at Villa La Brugère in 2022 and at the Champs des Impossibles in 2023. His photographs have been exhibited in Normandy (Le Radar, Bayeux; the Museum of Fine Arts in Caen) and abroad by the American magazine Subjectively Objective (Detroit, USA). In 2024, his works entered the ARDI – Photographies collection. His diverse image-making practices have led to repeated collaborations with poets and musicians.
